Mariya Markh

48th Council District - Brooklyn

A graduate of Edward R. Murrow H.S., Mariya holds a B.A. in political science and journalism from Brooklyn College and a Master's in politics from Fordham University. She worked for the New York City Council for almost a decade, spent two years as a senior community liaison for the Mayor’s Office, and has been active in local politics for more than 15 years.

Mariya has given her talents to three City Councilmembers’ offices — the late Lew Fidler, Chaim Deutsch, and Alan Maisel. She has been responsible for guiding constituents through inaccessible and often illogical government bureaucracy, connecting vulnerable residents with life-changing resources, and working in the trenches to help her local community recover from Superstorm Sandy. Earning the title of “Queen of Lien,” she helped hundreds of families stay in their homes by working to get them off the City’s annual lien sale.

At City Hall, Mariya served as the senior liaison to Brooklyn Community Boards 13 and 15 and the Russian-speaking community, bringing resources (including more than half a million masks) to the area. She worked to ensure that businesses, houses of worship, and community organizations had access to the critical information they needed during COVID and successfully brought testing sites to locations across the district.

In addition to her government work, Mariya has worked behind the scenes to help elect City Council members, Assembly members, State Senators, Congressmembers, and judges. She has served as Executive Director to Lew Fidler’s Democratic Club, and southern Brooklyn Vice President of the Brooklyn Young Democrats.

Mariya has called Sheepshead Bay/Homecrest her home for almost three decades and loves her adoring family, husband Lenny and their curious toddler Rebecca.
