36th Council District - Brooklyn

Tahirah A. Moore is a daughter of District 36, raised in Marcy Houses. A foundation of leadership built at the knee of tenant and community leaders has supported her growth as an advocate for all the people of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Crown Heights. Tahirah’s track record evidences her commitment to work fearlessly and tirelessly in the community’s interest to shift flawed paradigms.

Moore’s first schooling came at the Head-Start program in Marcy Houses, P.S. 297, and I.S. 33. After graduating from Norman Thomas High School, she traveled south to attend Liberty University. Her passion for government led to service as a Washington Fellow in the U.S. House of Representatives in her senior year, and graduation, cum laude, with a Bachelor of Science in Government, Politics, and Policy. Following college, Moore applied her education to work as a staffer in the United States Senate.

Following her return to Brooklyn, she worked tirelessly as a Legislative/Budget Assistant and Constituent Services Director at the New York City Council. There she advanced projects to push back against deed theft, the displacement of low-income renters, and educational injustice, as well as working with the crisis management system (“cure violence”) to combat gun violence in the District.

Moore’s understanding of the 36th District’s needs led her to transition to the role of Brooklyn Borough Director in the NYC Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, and later to serve as Senior Advisor in the Mayor’s Intergovernmental Affairs Unit. While on staff at City Hall, Moore worked behind the scenes to secure expense and capital funding to transform an abandoned police station in Marcy Houses into an intergenerational community center. In 2020, she was instrumental in negotiations leading to the passage and enactment of the Council bill banning chokeholds by members of the NYPD.

Moore has spent her entire career in service to those who deserve the best, but too often get the least. She has worked on both sides of the aisle while forging a path informed by examples of service in spite of struggle and deep faith.

Moore’s work for the 36th District has been guided by a village of everyday leaders, including her grandmother Ms. Charlotte “Lottie” Green, the late Mr. Raymond Ballard, Ms. Leora Keith, the late Dr. Roy Hastick, the late Ms. Rena Ruffin, Ms. Cynthia Simpson, Ms. Barbara Cohen, the late Ms. Yolanda Clarke, and Ms. Joanna of Albany Houses. “These unsung heroes and wise leaders pushed me to keep going and always put the people first. I am the child they raised to grow up and do good by her community. I wouldn’t change where I come from for the world, and I encourage our youth to never be ashamed of obstacles they may have to overcome. We are District 36 strong out here!”
